Under Eye Bags

When you get up in the morning and look in the mirror do you look tired and see bags under your eyes? Do you see hollows under your eyes? Have you tried to distract attention away from your tired appearance with concealer, tea bags, cucumber eye pads, etc.?  Often dark circles accompany puffy bags under the eyes. This can occur as early as your 30’s and reflects a loss of elasticity in the skin.

Home remedies can help because they may reduce the swelling.  Puffiness under the eye is due to the retention of fluid that may result from a lack of sleep, allergies, excess salt, etc. This can be minimized by healthy lifestyle changes. However, there are several professional options to improve your appearance.

Why Do I Have Bags Under My Eyes?

The appearance of under eye bags is usually due to aging that results in a combination of volume loss, and sagging, thinning of skin under and around the eyes. The fat pads that are there to protect your eye sockets become visible due to herniation of the fat pads. They are often accompanied by dark circles, discolorations which are generally due to your genetics. Dark circles become more visible because thinning skin reveals the blood vessels under the eye.

What Causes Under Eye Bags?

They may be caused by your genetics, lack of sleep and/or fluid retention and excess fat in the eye area. They are commonly part of the natural aging process. They can be treated with surgery, lasers and chemical peels. For a less invasive approach, fillers can be used to camouflage them.

Treatments

Too much fat can be treated with a surgical procedure called Blepharoplasty.

Too little fat and sagging skin can cause tear troughs to develop under the eyes. These tear troughs are indentations that run from the nose to the under eye area, and give the appearance of lower eye bags. They worsen with age. This is where dermal fillers are a good choice because they replenish the volume and provide more natural results than surgery.

Another viable option may be fat transfers or PRP. PRP or platelet rich plasma is the use of growth factors extracted from your blood, to plump the area, and induce the healing process which spurs collagen production and improves the blood supply to the area.

Laser resurfacing can tighten the skin to improve the overall appearance of the lid and cheek areas.
