Lip Augmentation

What is lip augmentation?

Lip augmentation is a cosmetic treatment developed to enhance thin or thinning lips with the use of injectable fillers.

Possible reasons you may want enhanced lips

There are multiple reasons. You may have thin lips. One reason is the natural aging process. As we age, we lose the elastin fibers in our lips resulting in a decrease in overall volume. Lips also vary in size due to individual anatomic variations. For instance, someone who is born with fuller lips may need less augmentation compared to someone born with thin lips.

What makes a beautiful lip?

The proportions between the upper and lower lips.  Aesthetically pleasing lips are determined by the total size and proportion of both lips. The ideal is when the upper lip is one third of the total and the lower lip is two thirds of the total size and proportion of the lips. While this may be aesthetically pleasing on many people, if the proportions of your face are not considered, your lips may appear to be out of balance.  Also important is the distance between your lips and your nose, as that distance lengthens as we age. In addition, aging lips can appear worse when, in addition to proportion, the corners of the mouth point downward.

At Pure Dermatology & Cosmetic Center, we provide the most natural way to enhance your lip volume and shape so you look and feel the way you should! We use several hyaluronic acid fillers namely Juvederm®, Juvederm UltraPlus®, Restylane®, and Restylane Silk® because they offer the most natural results with virtually no downtime.

Who’s a good candidate?

  • You have thin lips that vanish when you smile, and you would like to plump them up.
  • Your lips are uneven or your gums show when you smile.
  • You desire to balance out your facial features, and your lips are out of proportion.
  • You are in good health with no active cold sores, at the time of the procedure.
  • You have realistic expectations about your procedure.

However if you have diabetes or lupus, scarring on your lips or blood clotting problems you probably are not a good candidate.

What to expect

Getting ready: We recommend that you stop all aspirin, fish oil ibuprofen and alcohol, 2 days before and 2 days after the procedure to prevent bleeding and swelling. Additional instructions will be provided to you.

The day of your procedure: You will receive injections of the fillers that are determined to be the most appropriate to your needs based on the filler characteristics, your unique lip features and your goals. Most all of them contain lidocaine to numb the area, for your comfort. You can expect a fast recovery.

Aftercare Instructions: There is minimal downtime with injectable fillers. You may have some bruising, swelling and discomfort that will respond well to cold compresses.

Lip augmentation with soft tissue fillers can provide natural enhancement with virtually no downtime. Key to your outcome is the injector’s experience and her solid foundation in lip anatomy. Better yet is a cosmetic dermatologist with an artistic eye. Dr. Neda Mehr fits all of those criteria!
